Fresh Air

So this morning I decided to take a quick jog, outside. It was cold, windy,  but nothing was going to stop me. This was the first time I ventured off a treadmill since the operation.

The ankle felt fine, a little “creaky” but once it warmed up, it felt fine. I can feel I ran on it this morning, but nothing more than if I ran on the treadmill. This is normal, I’m told, so I don’t need to worry.

You can see the route here, but here are the details of my first proper run on the road:

29:30 min, 6.3km at a pace of 4:41 min/km. Avg HR (a very high) 159.

The build up

Since I started my new program, I’ve been building up the mileage very slowly. The graph below is taken from my RunningAhead profile:

30DaysGraph

As you can see I’m trying to be very disciplined in building the mileage, I really don’t want to induce another injury. Having said that, the ankle is feeling great, so I’m hoping to kick it up a notch soon.

Relief

So, yesterday I mentioned that I would going for a post operation checkup. Stress view x-rays and the like. While I was pretty confident that everything would be ok, I was slightly nervous. I could compare it to that feeling of going into an exam where you’ve aced all the tests leading up to it. Only it was a first for me.

The results: everything is looking great. “Success” would be the word to use. The ankle is very stable, it hardly moved during the x-ray. It won’t be long before I’m on the road and running 60km weeks again. Although I certainly won’t be rushing into anything, so it’ll be at least 3 weeks before I’ll be running solidly on the road.

Training for week 25/6 - 1/7

I’m 3 weeks into my new “running” program, and all is well. Except for the treadmill part, I’m ecstatic to be running again. Comrades 2008 seems so far away, yet I can smell that finish already.

Here’s the dirt:

Date Goal Time Dist (km) Avg HR
Mon 25/6 20 min 20:00 3.32 136
Wed 27/6 20 min 20:00 3.34 138
Fri 29/6 20min 20:10 3.4 136
Sat 30/6 30 min 30:10 5 140
Totals 90 Min 90:20 15.1km

So looking back at the week,  the 30 minute run on Saturday is definitely a milestone. However, my ankle isn’t perfect yet, but it’s stable, and there’s no pain, just discomfort, which I’m told is normal. My HR is relatively low, but from looking at last year, my HR was always higher when running on a treadmill.

In other news, I’m off to see my orthopaedic surgeon for a final consultation and a stress view x-ray tomorrow. Basically, they pull the ankle apart, while taking an x-ray, to try and see how it reacts under stress. I’m confident all should be fine, wish me luck.
