I’m bored of the treadmill.
I’m tired of running in one place, and not actually going anywhere.
I’m tired of the music they play.
Hopefully it won’t be long before I can breathe fresh mountain air while running.

So my “training” for the past week (18/6 to 24/6) has gone well. I’m increasing the distance and time run slowly, and had my longest run yet on Saturday morning. It’s taking me 15 minutes just to get enjoying a run, so I’m only starting to really enjoy my runs now. Even if they are only on a treadmill.
| Date | Goal | Time | Dist (km) | Avg HR |
| Mon 18/6 | 15 min | 15:00 | 2.5 | 134 |
| Wed 20/6 | 15 min | 15:00 | 2.5 | 136 |
| Fri 22/6 | 20min | 20:00 | 3.3 | 136 |
| Sat 23/6 | 25 min | 25:00 | 3.34 | 137 |
| Totals | 75 Min | 75:00 | 12.5km |
I also started to leave my ankle brace at home, as was told my ankle is stable enough, and the treadmill is a very safe environment for me to run. It’s difficult to turn an ankle over on the treadmill. I also had a nice cycle on Friday evening. Nothing too hectic, just some fresh air.
Overall, I’m happy with my progress, although I can’t wait until I’m able to do a long run, or even some speed work.
Chances are slim that I’ll be able to run this, but wow, is this tempting. The same guys who organised the Cape Epic, their attention now turns to trail running. From the website:
On the 16th of October, runners start at Africa’s Southern Cape Coast, heading up steep hiking trails, threading through forest singletrack and enduring the harsh elements before arriving at their final destination, the Cape Winelands.
Not sure if it’s tougher than the Pennine Challenge though, although it’s a single day event.
Some more info: Limited to 100 runners this year, with numbers increasing to 1000 in 2008. The longest run day is 60km and the shortest 30km. I can’t wait for next year, definitely going to give it a try.
Every once in a while, I stumble across a blog that has me in awe. It’s even better when it’s a South African blog. The Science of Sport is one blog that leaves me wanting more. It’s written by two sports scientists, Ross Tucker and Jonathan Dugas who share a passion for sport, particularly running and cycling.
Many of the articles are slightly controversial, which makes for great reading. Here are a few (but not all) articles which relate to running:
There are many other great posts, and I suggest you add it to your reading list.
Wow, I haven’t done this in a while, I actually have some running to report back on. The goal of this last week, was to slowly increase the amount of running on the treadmill, and go do my strength workouts at least 3 times. I was also planning on getting some cycling done, weather depending.
So here’s how my “running” went:
| Date | Goal | Time | Dist (km) | Avg HR |
| Mon 11/6 | 11 min | 11:00 | 1.81 | 139 |
| Wed 13/6 | 11 min | 11:09 | 1.8 | 127 |
| Fri 15/6 | 12 min | 12:00 | 2 | 134 |
| Sat 16/6 | 20 min | 20:01 | 3.34 | 137 |
| Totals | 54 Min | 54:10 | 9 | 134 |
The runs all went well, ankle held up fine, but I did run every one with my ankle brace. I have to wear it for at least another 3 months, while running. On Friday, I got my 1 cycle in, and it was marvelous. Running on a treadmill just doesn’t compare to fresh air. I can’t wait to be able to run outside, at a faster pace than 6min/km.
I forgot to add that I did some spinning, on Tuesday and Thursday. About 70 minutes in total. I don’t like to talk about spinning, so that is all.
